Understanding Green Terminology –
What are VOCs? Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are organic chemical compounds that have high enough vapor pressure under normal conditions to vaporize and enter the atmosphere. Common sources of VOCs include: paint, cleaning supplies, adhesives, carpets and other building supplies.
Why PVC-Free? By eliminating PVC content, VOCs are eliminated from eco-friendly fabrics, removing the need for off-gassing during the life of a product. By choosing eco-friendly fabrics, you can improve the indoor air quality of your home or work place. PVC-free fabrics are also recyclable.
What is Off-Gassing? Off-gassing is the evaporation of VOCs at normal atmospheric pressure. Some products, such as PVC screens, release chemicals into the air through evaporation over the life of the product. While you work, live and sleep, you are breathing in these chemicals.
LEED Certification – Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) for Commercial Interiors Rating System
While no product can be LEED certified, the components that make up a particular product may be LEED certified, hence the incorporation of eco-friendly or green fabrics on a project may help the total project achieve LEED Certification by contributing toward Energy Performance, Material and Resource Use and Indoor Environmental Quality – three of the five credit categories needed for LEED certification.
